Sunrise at the John Oliver Cabin - Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee.

Anyone that has been to Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee knows that, despite its immense beauty, the area is often jam-packed with tourists. In fact, it can often be pretty difficult to find peace and tranquility in this mountain valley. When one does find some peace and quiet, however, it's a magnificent experience.

Peace and quiet is exactly what I found on this chilly March morning in the Cove though! I was delighted as I made the short walk out to the John Oliver cabin and saw that the sky was developing a bit of color from the sun that was just starting to peek above the mountains.

These were by far some of the most peaceful moments I've had in Cades Cove, with the exception being the time I walked the loop during a small snow storm.

During my last trip to The Great Smoky Mountains, I decided that I wanted to night hike up Mt. Leconte to Myrtle Point to attempt to photograph the sunrise. This is a trip I've been trying to do for several months, but the weather has never been particularly cooperative!

I obsessively checked the weather and determined that my best window of opportunity would be Sunday morning. So, it was set. I'd wake up at 2 a.m. on Sunday, drive to the Alum Cave Trailhead, and hike up Mt. Leconte in the dark.

My Impromptu Trip to the Great Smoky Mountains

It has been a few weeks now since my last trip to the Great Smoky Mountains, but I'd like to take a moment to share the trip with you.

If you've followed my adventures for any length of time it shouldn't come as any surprise that this trip was extremely spur of the moment! I didn't do what I had originally planned in The Smokies, but I did stop off to visit a Kentucky waterfall with some friends and had a great time just wandering around the mountains with my camera.

Enough of that, though. It's time to jump right on into my top 10 favorite images from 2017!

Mt. Cammerer Revisited

Mt. Cammerer Revisted

I spent a week on a road trip to The Great Smoky Mountains National Park with my mom. The trip was meant to be a really chill trip and, for the most part, it was. The problem was that I was getting rather stir crazy from not doing any hikes, even though I was surrounded by mountains just begging to be climbed! On the last day of the trip, Friday, I decided to break away for a few hours to go revisit Mt. Cammerer.

Climbing Mount Leconte

Climbing Mt. Leconte Via Alum Cave Trail - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Remember a few months ago when snow spoiled my plans to climb Mt. Leconte in The Smokies? Well, I decided it was finally time to go back and conquer the mountain! I reserved the hotel, made the 4 and a half-hour drive down to Tennessee, and prepared to complete the hike the following day, which was Saturday.

Newfoudn Gap Road in the Snow 3

Things Didn't Go As Planned - Great Smoky Mountains - January 2017

This weekend I took a trip down to The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The plan was relatively simple; Hike to the summit of Mt. Leconte (via the Alum Cave Trail) and make a video for the Youtube channel in the process. In the days leading up to the trip, I packed my gear, watched the weather, and paid attention to the daily conditions up on Leconte. The weather forecasts were calling for snow.

The prospect of snow excited me, but I was worried about the possibility of Newfound Gap Road being closed due to the snow and ice. Because of this, I came up with several backup plans. One being to do a winter ascent of Mt. Cammerer and the other being to photograph Cade's Cove and possibly hike to Abram's Falls. I was, or so I thought, prepared.
